Celebrating Social Media Day Cincinnati Style

Imagine setting aside one day out of the year to celebrate and build awareness around social media across the world. Top Social Media Blogger Mashable has declared Wednesday, June 30th, 2010: Social Media Day. Mashable states that this day was created “to celebrate the revolution of media becoming a social dialogue.”

Cities around the world are creating their own unique twists around the day and communities everywhere will be able to link their content on Twitter, Flickr and YouTube via the common hash tag #smday. You can keep tabs on the global celebration by connecting to the Social Media Day Facebook Page or Twitter feed.

Here in Cincinnati, the day is being organized by local social media networking group Cincinnati Social Media (#CincySM on twitter) founded by Kevin Dugan, Dan Lally and Dave Knox in partnership with Ignite Cincinnati. Ignite is a cool presentation concept with a quirk. The Ignite website describes it as:

“…a night of presentations with a twist. 14 presenters each get 5 minutes to talk about their subject. 20 slides that auto advance after 15 seconds. It is quick, fun, smart and fills the Know Theater.“

Cincinnati Social Media is known for sponsoring topical, thought-provoking seminars in cool spaces across the city which sell-out within an hour or two of posting. Read more about previous CincySm events here.

Wednesday’s event will occur at the Lavomatic Cafe in the OTR Gateway (Cincinnati’s historic Over the Rhine district) from 5:00 p.m.- 6:15 p.m. According to the event page, free drinks and appetizers will be available until the tab has been reached. This will be followed by the Ignite 3 presentations at close-by Know Theater. The event sponsor is Vitrue, a company focused on technology solutions for social media management.

Here’s an example of a recent Cincinnati Ignite presentation featuring Candace Klein, attorney and founder of the micro-lending program for women: Bad Girl Ventures.

All are welcome to attend Social Media Day Cincinnati, but you will need to pre-register here.

Social Media Ranting: Time to Dialogue!!

Ok, this is simply pathetic. It has been so long since I lasted posted that Blogger has changed it's background design and added some new capabilities. Ugggh. Have been incredibly busy with the business and new clients and projects. All good- but so many very cool things to work on and so little time. I already have lots of people asking me 'when do I sleep?' Ummm, are the dark circles showing or are they just following me on all of the spokes of my social media presence?? I need a clone now!! Preferably one that can make incredible gourmet meals; bake goodies to share with others; clean my house so that it doesn't look like it has been taken over by dust mites; attend out-of-town seminars like the very cool social media event going on in Boston- wait, I WANT to attend that event- the clone can work on client projects...... Anyway,

I have been meaning to blog on several key business/networking events and hoping to deposit the impressions of my experiences in a brand new business blog dedicated to all things flying around in my C3: Creating Connections World- but just couldn't get the blog going and it was causing a stalemate in the writing end of things. No point in developing brilliant business analysis if you have no garage to park it in, so back to Kaleidoscope Discoveries, which as the explanation and disclaimer states: is a place for my random musings.

So, here are some key events that will be future blog posts on the new Biz Blog (coaching note to self- write it down on the To Do list and put a date next to it with the letter 'A'- can we say graduate of Franklin Planner Time Mangement System???):

  • Get Motivated! Seminar featuring Laura Bush, General Colin Powell, Rudy Giuliani and others. I have lots to say on this!!!! Would I do it again?......NO!!!
Want to leave you with some very cool quotes from a very eye-catching (especially in the title) presentation on Social Media by Marta Kagan.

"Technology is shifting the power away from the editors, the publishers, the establishment, the media elite. Now it's the people who are in control."

-Rupert Murdoch, Global Media Entrepreneur

"The word blog is irrelevant. What's important is that it is now common and will soon be expected that every intelligent person (and quite a few unintelligent ones) will have a media platform where they share what they care about with the world."

-Seth Godin, Author

Ok, last one from the presentation creator herself:

"If your product sucks, then social media won't fix it."

-Marta Kagan

Amen. I'm outta here- back to the social media of my own business. Remember folks it's all in the conversation. Strike up a dialogue- you just might like what happens (hey, you can quote ME on that one!).

TWITTER MILESTONE

Just hit a Twitter milestone last night by having the 1,000th follower find me organically. I started this Twitter account in February and have followed an organic natural approach to developing a "Tribe". I believe that each Tweeter needs to develop a strategy for their account, whether it is for personal or business usage. This particular account is my personal account and I tweet a variety of messages, both business (social media & marketing related) and general messages (comments on current events, great quotes, etc.). The emphasis here is on "conversation" and building relationships with interesting and knowledgeable people around the globe. I began with four categories of people that I wanted to follow personally: Some follow back and some don't. I occasionally ask a follower how they found me and the answers are quite varied. I have never used an auto-follower or any type of auto-reply message. When someone follows me, I check out their tweets, bio, stats (do they tweet 100X/day, cus I don't want that much noise in my life!!) and their web-site. If they fit one of my four criteria above or seem to be incredibly interesting, then I follow back and send a personal message thanking them for the follow. I always include their name and some tidbit from their page so they will know that it is not an automated response. I enjoy engaging in discussion with other Tweeters. I have built some great on-line and off-line friendships as well as discovered business opportunities and created some partnerships.

The most exciting thing is attending a live networking event, and meeting someone that you have been in conversation with for a while on Twitter. There is always the feeling that you have known the person for a long time, even though you are meeting for the first time!
I have no idea what it will feel like to have 2,000 followers or even 10,000 followers, but for now things feel manageable for this personal account.

A business account is a completely different animal and requires a much different strategy both for following and
obtaining followers. Note the emphasis on the word "obtaining"-with a business account, you would be foolish to let things happen organically. Business accounts demand tribe development- after all, aren't you selling something???

New Media Cincinnati August Meet-Up

Attended the August 2nd Saturday New Media Cincinnati Meet-Up at the Pub in Rookwood Commons. The theme this time around was "Questions from a Hat" and the 50 or so attendees wrote in burning questions that they had regarding social media. Daniel Johnson Jr., founder of NMC, pulled the questions one at a time from his signature baseball cap. The questions were answered by volunteers from the audience and ran the gamut from high
ly technical questions on web development like the one by
@editvdo that was waaay over my head to the interestingly humorous question askin
g who had been working with social media the longest and who had the oldest Twitter account.

If memory serves me right, I believe our Mad Scientist in-residence, Catherine, aka @foxydot and Daniel Johnson Jr., are the group's early Twitter adopters. The question about longevity with social media became debatable around the definition of what social media truly means. Some folks go back many decades to ham radio days and even I submitted to the group that my foray with media and being social started on my driveway in my dad's parked car at age 13 on the CB radio.

Interestingly enough, I just discovered one of those early virtual friends on Facebook. We talked many times over the course of a Jr. High year, and although we were the same age, never met (just too far to ride a bike to). I remembered his real name all these years and found him on a friend's high school reunion FB page. Now we are connected on FB and "talk" often and are "friends" on Twitter (there is a difference between a follower and a friend). In fact, I had been searching my old journals for mention of our CB radio friendship and/or conversations and found the journal with him in it. Will absolutely have to scan some of the pages and post it to FB. I stated he was a "really nice guy" way back at 13 and today, an un-named number of years later, I can truthfully say he is one hell of a nice guy! Some things never change....

I digress, back to NMC.......Daniel did a great job of preparing a message for folks to become acquainted with prior to the meeting. It involved things we could do as a group to keep the noise down while people were speaking, since we have been operating without a microphone. This mic free state works for smaller groups, but we have consistently been getting around 50 folks in attendance. He also asked for the "regulars" (you know who you are!) to break out of their group comfort zone and welcome people who were coming for the first time.

There is always a great mix of people at these events. People of all backgrounds, experience levels and ages: all focused on sharing and learning. Many of the people that I have become good friends with were met in a completely virtual way first on Twitter. It's always so exciting to meet live after establishing an on-line relationship. The profile pics are a big help with identifying folks and that's why it's so important to make sure that you have a high quality professional close-up
for your smaller-than-a-postage stamp size Twitter pic. Back in the day, all we had to recognize our CB radio virtual friends when we met live, was the sound of their voice. Imagine that! And yes, I did participate in a couple CB meet-ups in my town (hoping my mom doesn't read this blog!)-I guess these were pre-cursors to today's Tweet-ups!

So, if you have been seeing a lot of posts about Second Saturdays in Cincinnati, you really must come out and join us. We have a total blast (just check us out in the phone booth above!) learning. sharing, connecting and creating friendships and business relationships. I know where I'll be on Saturday, September 12th
. Won't you join us?

"Becoming the Best Version of Yourself"

Attended a Dream Manager Workshop given by the inspirational Catholic spiritual speaker Matthew Kelly last week. There were nearly 500 people gathered together in my college alma mater meeting space, Xavier University's Cintas Center. Daniel Johnson Jr., founder of local networking group, New Media Cincinnati and I sat among strangers and friends all seeking the wisdom to be found in pursuing our dreams.

Matthew Kelly has teamed up with Amend Consulting to offer the Dream Manager Program to companies and to individuals. The main thrust of the program according to the literature:

"The Dream Manager Program is a unique program that combines traditional business planning principles with an original system of personal life-coaching. People become more engaged at work and in life."

The point is that if you have dreams that can be fulfilled in your personal life, then you will be more productive in your work life and focused on achieving goals and dreams there as well.

Who doesn't want to have a Dream Manager coaching them to reach for the stars? The first thing to do is to list every dream that you have. Some people were able to list nearly 100 dreams in the short time that we worked on one of the workshop assignments! List your dreams and start setting realistic goals to achieve them.

I feel fortunate that for the most part, I have lived my entire life following my dreams. Sure, I have a few that I haven't gotten to, but the point is that when you have that list and you are working toward achieving those goals, you become a happier, more fulfilled person. In that state, you are able to give even more to the people who depend upon your leadership.

Here are a few key nuggets that I took away and simultaneously tweeted (multi-tasking is hell sometimes, lol!):

  • BECOME THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF
  • FUNDAMENTAL DRIVER IN LIFE: PEOPLE WANT TO BE HAPPY
  • PEOPLE ARE ATTRACTED TO LVL 4 HIGH ENERGY PEOPLE (confident, joyful, enthusiastic, invigorating people)
  • TRANSITION SPACE BETWEEN THE PRESENT AND FUTURE IS CALLED "KRAZYTIME"
  • MOST POWERFUL THINGS IN THE WORLD ARE DREAMS
  • BRAND THE DREAM, BRAND THE VISION
  • ENGAGED PEOPLE CAN INFLUENCE THE FUTURE

I am completely sold on the program, so come fall, you will find me in a small group in the Dream Manager Public Forum Program. Care to join me in becoming the best version of yourself possible?

Social Media Ate My Blog Post Homework.....

Apologies for the recent lack of blog posts. This past week has been busy with a wide variety of social media experiences. Thought I'd take take a minute, slow down and examine just how my week was spent on the social media highway (yes, I know this seems like a lame attempt to explain why I haven't written anything lately as well as a thinly disguised way to create a post without really creating a post, if you get what I mean??!!). Here goes:
  • Worked with two local small businesses to show them how to use Social Media tools to increase their marketing efforts and effectiveness
  • Worked with a new coaching client in the areas of social media training and job search
  • Prepped for an upcoming social media seminar that I will be leading on 7/10/09
  • Worked out details for an upcoming local chamber of commerce event I will be participating in
  • Participated in the Live Talk-Shoe New Media Cincinnati Community planning call for the July meet-up- Call (listen here) was simultaneously live-tweeted
  • Live-tweeted from the July 3rd Cincinnati Reds vs. the Cardinals game
  • Twitpic' d the game and the concluding fireworks
  • Had a great social media discussion with family friend Stan Joosten, Innovation Manager for Holistic Consumer Communication at P&G (very, very cool job he has!) at our 4th of July party
  • And of course continued to create connections with business partners, potential clients and friends on Twitter!
So there you have it: a new blog post. Mission accomplished!!

NEW MEDIA CINCINNATI SPINS MAGIC: THE POWER IS IN THE PARTICIPANTS

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!

The
New Media Cincinnati networking group had their monthly meet-up last Saturday at The Pub @Rookwood Commons. Daniel Johnson, Jr., founder of the rapidly growing group, changed up the usual format and declared it an UnConference Meet-Up. For the uninitiated, or non-geeks like myself (totally used as a term of endearment!), an un-conference occurs when the meeting content is wholly created by the partipants in a highly organic fashion and members follow the "two-feet rule", which means if you don't like what you're hearing, walk those two feet over to another presentation, according to Daniel.

The group spoke up about topics they wanted to participate in and leaders volunteered to spearhead the groups; provide expert knowledge in the area and facilitate the discussion. Corners of the room were designated for each topic. In true organic fashion, new topics and groups spun up on their own. At any given time, one could wander from

  • Fervant discussions on Twitter and best apps to manage tweets
  • Telecommuting and Jelly Meet-Ups (founded by AmyBeth Hale: day where telecommuters meet at a local venue to create community and work side-by-side to foster the camaraderie of the traditional office-place.)
  • Blogging
  • Pod-casting
  • Videography

This particular Saturday afternoon was gorgeous and the Pub opened up the patio to make good use of the outdoors. Smart move on their part, as the crowd was large. I counted about 60 folks in attendance from a wide variety of walks of life: Videographers, business folks, bloggers, techies, traditional journalists, recruiters, small business owners, pod casters, musicians- the list goes on and on. The key here is that the group and it's centeral focus on new media is what brought folks out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon-and once again on a holiday weekend, Mother's Day!

The opportunity to share and learn and to create conversations that lead to incredible discovery of "other" is that magic that New Media Cincinnati spins. The group discusses the topics and yet at the same time becomes the topic in two key ways.

First- everything that occurs at a meet-up is being transmitted live under the creative commons licence. Members are tweeting, texting, status updating on Facebook and a live video stream is running so that friends and fans from across the land can join in our organic mayhem.

Secondly, in the pure act of coming together in conversation, we are becoming the essence of what social media is all about: connection and conversation. In the act of conversing we are changing the course of dialogue: creating new opportunities of thought; creating working relationships and partnerships and the most important end product of all- creating friendships.

And that folks is where it's truly at. The human element. The heart. Where social media: the tools become social media: the people. Come join us on the second Saturday of every month from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the Pub. I guarantee you will walk away with more knowledge and a new friend or two (or 10!!!).

Social Media- It's All in a Day's Work in Cincinnati

Spent a great day surrounded at the beginning and end by all things Social Media. Social Media is all about connecting with others through the use of new media tools and applications. Obviously, the best way for the social media magic to continue, is to take that connection off-line and turn it into an in-the-flesh encounter.

I am a people person. I absolutely love meeting people, discovering things about them and creating conversations which lead to relationships. I have a photographic memory and a huge penchant for remembering details about people. I put this gift to good use by connecting people to each other and to opportunites that I think might be a good fit. Malcolm Gladwell calls people like this "Connectors" in his book The Tipping Point. He states, "Connectors are the people who link us up with the world ... people with a special gift for bringing the world together." They are "a handful of people with a truly extraordinary knack [... for] making friends and acquaintances."
This is why I aptly named my firm: C3: Creating Connections Consulting, LLC.

Speaking in front of a group about a subject that I am passionate about is a joy for me. When one adds in the opportunity to meet with the audience participants in small groups or one-on-one for further conversation, I am in connection heaven. I had the opportunity to present a seminar on leveraging Social Media Marketing tools for the Small Business Sector at the Legacy Connection Group Meeting today. There were about 50 small business owners, entrepreneurs and folks in transition in attendance for my talk. It's always nice to see some familiar faces in the crowd, and today was no exception. I also met some great folks who have already connected with me on LinkedIn and/or Twitter to further our conversation.

I ended the day with a planning meeting call on TalkShoe with members of the Social Media networking group, New Media Cincinnati, founded by Daniel Johnson, Jr. In additon to being on the call, which was recorded and will be turned into a podcast for the group web-site, we were live-Tweeting the meeting. You can check out the tweets on #newmediacincy.

Cincinnati is a city brightly shining on the Social Media Highway Map. Groups like New Media Cincinnati, Cincinnati Women Bloggers and Cincinnati Social Media Breakfast, co-founded by my former Xavier University classmate, Daniel Lally are helping to raise awareness in the Queen City.

I continue utilizing Social Media into the night with this long overdue posting to my Blog (I have been sick for the past 7 days!) and will probably send out some tweets and comments to my FB news feed before diving into my Roberto Bolano book. My close friend has been on my case to finish
The Savage Detectives so that we can discuss its contents. Maybe I'll tweet about what we discover, or then again, maybe not.....................

LESSONS FROM HOME: A QUICK HOP ON THE SOCIAL MEDIA HIGHWAY

How cool is it to have a crash lesson on WordPress at midnight from the comfort of my home, ponytail and sweats as my working uniform?? My instructor, Daniel Johnson, Jr., in his home office in some other part of our fair city guiding me through the process. Using Dim-Dim Web Conferencing and Skype for chat capabilities (yes, we could have just been on our phones- but hey, might as well go high tech all the way around!), we edited a piece that I had posted to the New Media Cincinnati Web site. Daniel was able to show me, via his computer screen, some of the extra functions that Word Press has to offer as well as how to edit the HTML that he had loaded onto the site. We also went over some key ways to increase the "Google Juice" factor for searches and other SEO tips.

Last item to take care of was to create an RT (Re-Tweet) capability for readers to be able to immediately re-post to Twitter and have the link-back URL as a "bit.ly" which has incredible tracking capabilities as Daniel showed me on his computer screen. As 12:30 a.m. approached, I have to admit that my brain was starting to shut down. So we called it a night (morning?) and signed off.

Anyone that has met Daniel knows that he is passionate about New Media. His excitement and enthusiasm shines through in every New Media Cincinnati Meet-Up. He has a strong desire to help others in so many ways (community outreach, "How I Got My Job" Podcast, etc.) and I am very fortunate to be traveling the net highway with him as my own New Media OnStar plan!

We are at an incredible time in our lives, where the world is shifting by quantum leaps into a new way of communicating and connecting quickly across the globe. I'm just thrilled to be along for the ride!

NEW MEDIA CINCINNATI MARCH MEET-UP

New Media enthusiasts came together once again for the March Meet Up for the group New Media Cincinnati at The Pub at Rookwood Mews on 3/14. The luck of the Irish was in the air and organizer Daniel Johnson Jr. was creating his Social Media magic while working the near capacity crowd with Ustream capturing the action. Approximately 55 people came together to network, drink spirits and listen to the five Jolt presenters who spoke on topics that they were passionate about for five to 10 minutes each. The presenters and topics were:

  • John Buehler, "Communicating Your Web Presence"
  • Kristin Beireis, "How Social Is Too Social?"
  • Andy Erickson, "University of Cincinnati's Center of Innovation Efforts"
  • Heath Parks, "Starting a video blog and learning how to encode for the web"
  • Vickie Sciefers: “Changes in Facebook”

John Buehler talked about the site http://lifedigits.com/ that he is working on that will allow for one-stop shopping for all your social media information. He is looking for people to test it out, so give him a shout on Twitter if you are interested.

Kristin Beireis talked about Social Media Etiquette and keeping a balance between business and personal information. “We don’t want to know your bathroom habits!”

Andy Erickson spoke about his passion for creating a Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Cincinnati.

Heath Parks spoke about video blogs and best sites and camera equipment to use.

Vickie Sceifers talked about the changes in Facebook formatting and talked about frustrations that people were having with the site.

The discussion was lively and group members walked away with some great information, new friendships and additional business contacts. We recorded a group shout-out for Ustream and Daniel spent some of the open network time recording individual participant shout-outs for later broadcast.

The question was raised regarding “What brought you to the Meet Up?”
The number one answer was: “NETWORKING” followed by “Friend”- which is just more networking in the WOM vein. Other answers included: the Scene, Love for social media, Twitter, New Media Cincinnati Web site, The Force Newsletter, Learning and Daniel Johnson, Jr..

See you next month for the April 11th Meet Up. Stay tuned for upcoming details.

NEW MEDIA CINCINNATI

A British Pub, a funky neon-green Margarita, a room full of “virtual” strangers and an ice- breaker exercise to demonstrate physically the subject matter to which we had all been drawn to. Strange combination of confluences you might ask, but in reality they all came together to make one of the most enlightening and enjoyable evenings I’ve had in a long while.

I attended the New Media Cincinnati Meet Up at The Pub at Rookwood Mews. The group was created by Daniel Johnson, Jr. for folks who have an interest in new media (podcasting, video podcasting, blogging, micro-blogging, social networking, etc.). I am an extroverted super connector by personality trait, a free-lance writer, a Learner according to the Clifton Strength Finder Leadership Tool (put out by the Gallup Poll folks), a huge user of social networking (LinkedIn, Facebook, Plaxo) and a person very much interested in the future of new media.

Daniel began the Meet Up by asking folks to write one word that best described themselves on their name tag with the additional instruction to place the tag high on the shoulder to save room for later. I was immediately intrigued. Competitive person that I am, I went through a couple of name tags until I thought I had best captured my essence. Little did I know that the actual exercise would involve the strangers around me further distilling that essence. They were instructed to come up with their own one-word description of me after a brief conversation together. It was great fun and a very creative way to force people to get out of their comfort zone, move around and meet new people. By the end of the night I had accomplished the following:

  • Met quite a few highly fascinating people
  • Learned why I should jump on the Twitter bandwagon and Tweet along with the rest of the enlightened world
  • Asked to contribute some writing for the Girlfriendology.com website (“the online community for women based on female friendship”)
  • Recorded for a promo for the podcast “How I Got My Job”
  • Took several photos which I later posted to my Facebook and to the New Media Cincy Flcikr site (as well as here)
  • Had a complete and total K-A blast!

Then I extended the night by having dinner at the pub with Jeanne Bernish, Mike Finn and Steve Platt. Unbeknownst to the group, we discovered that all four of us live within shouting distance (ok, yodeling distance) of each other. We all have a background or interest in writing as well as a blog on the side. It was great, spirited conversation and a wonderful end to a fabulous evening.

Looking forward to the next Meet Up in February and by then I should be an old hand at Tweeting my way through the universe. (Btw, the neon-green margarita was fab!)
